IKARA \ VULKATHUNHA

"As we explored the rugged environment, the ranges shared an untamed beauty that stretched beyond my initial expectations. Standing in its vastness, it was impossible to not feel humbled by the scale of nature's creation." - Chris Saunders

THE PROJECT

What could four of Australia's finest landscape photographers create, sight unseen, in the Australian outback?

In September 2022 Lumen Australis set out to the Ikara Flinders Ranges and Vulkathunha Gammon Ranges to explore, document, create, and respond to a rich and ancient Australian landscape.

Their journey on the road would take them from the Victorian border through to Port Augusta (where they'd stay a night unplanned, waiting for flood waters to lower), through Hawker, and to iconic locations such as the Wilpena Pound and Arkaroola, with many barren and harsh landscapes between.

The project also encompasses aerial photography over Lake Frome, a salt lake where the Adnyamathanha people still hunt to this day.
